On Wednesday, January 7th, 2026, around 9:40 a.m., between E. 34th St. & Portland Ave in Minneapolis, a shooting involving an ICE agent and a woman in an SUV occurred. According to DHS, chaos began when rioters blocked ICE agents with a car, and the woman “allegedly tried to run the agents over before shots were fired. “

While some believe the incident was self-defense, others argue that the video provides no evidence to support such claims. According to NBC News, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed immense disgust after watching the playback: "They are already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense," Frey said, referring to ICE. "Having seen the video of myself, I want to tell everybody directly that is b---s---."

As the incident is currently under investigation, this video has revealed some facts. Here’s what we know:

  • The Department of Homeland Security spokesperson has confirmed that the 37-year-old woman who was shot has died of her injuries.
  • None of the law enforcement members reported injuries.
  • Several ICE agents approached the burgundy SUV, which was parked in the middle of the street, and ordered the driver to exit. When one agent grabbed the driver’s side door handle, the car reversed and then drove forward. Three shots from an agent near the front of the vehicle rang out as the SUV then crashed into a parked car and a light pole.

While details remain limited as the investigation is ongoing, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara agreed that the tactics used by ICE agents were troublesome: “Whenever there’s a shooting into a vehicle of someone who’s not armed, it’s concerning.”

After the morning incident, residents and locals flooded the streets, chanting, throwing snowballs, and mocking federal agents (KARE). As a result, the officers deployed pepper spray and tear gas.

According to the NY Times, this event may have been the last straw for President Trump’s Immigrant crackdown. To date, ICE officers and agents have arrested 1,400 people in Minneapolis since December 13th, compared to the roughly 300 arrested by December 12th. As the largest DHS immigration effort ever, many Minnesota residents of varying descent are fearing for their lives.

Tensions continue to rise as final details of the investigation emerge.
